16 Little Dogs Dumped in Abandoned Home in Danger From Heat and Coyotes
Sixteen dogs dumped in an abandoned home by the Salton Sea in California are safe thanks to a group of rescuers coming together to get them. Concerned citizens had called local animal control but because it was a Saturday, there would not be anyone able to come help until Monday.
A rescuer called their friends at The Animal Rescue Center of California (ARC) for help knowing that “the dogs were young and between the desert heat and coyotes, they would not last till Monday.” So ARC and several other groups drove out to the abandoned home to rescue the dogs.
Among the heaps of garbage and discarded tires, dogs popped out their heads, wary of the people. The dogs were all scared and it took some coaxing to catch them. It turned into a real team effort. They caught some of the dogs but they worried that they would scare the other dogs away so they set up traps and continued to work. There was a pup hiding under a mattress, there were several lurking outside the building, and more.
Eventually, the rescuers got them all except for one that “we only heard but never saw.” But that straggler showed up the following day and walked into the trap. Mission accomplished!
The dogs are now all at different rescues. Palm Springs Animal Shelter took six dogs, Petting Animal Rescue took four dogs, and the other dogs are awaiting foster homes. Visit ARC for more details.
