Mother Dog Force-fed Drugs is Saved Along with Her 10 Puppies

A mother dog and her 10 puppies are safe in foster care after being rescued from a harrowing ordeal. A concerned citizen contacted the SPCA in Prince George, British Columbia after witnessing the four-year-old German short-haired pointer being beaten and force fed drugs and alcohol by her owner. The Good Samaritan also saw one of the puppies being physically abused and promptly took action.

The BC SPCA rescued the mama dog and her puppies after obtaining a search warrant and immediately took the dogs to a veterinarian, who found evidence of past fractures and scars on the mother. A toxicity test also confirmed the dog had ingested drugs.

Since arriving at the humane society, Mama dog has reached out to her rescuers for love.

“Mama dog loves humans,” says Rachel Cook, animal welfare officer, North Cariboo District SPCA Branch. “She wants to sit on your lap. She wants to hold hands with her paw. She’s just so sweet.”

Mama dog and her 2-week-old puppies are now being well looked after in a foster home. According to the shelter’s news release, the puppies will be ready for adoption when they are eight-weeks old and Mama dog will be ready for adoption after she has been spayed.

“She is doing well and doing such a great job looking after her babies. She is going to make a great family dog in a few months,” says Cook. “They’ve been through a lot. We’re so proud of them.”
