Dog Food Recalled Due To Elevated Vitamin D Levels

A popular dog food brand is recalling some of their products due to elevated levels of Vitamin D.

Fromm Family Foods is recalling about 5500 cases of its Fromm Shredded Entrée wet dog food. They stated, “The recall was initiated after we discovered, through our own analysis, that these products may contain elevated levels of Vitamin D. We have identified and isolated the error, and in addition to our existing safety process, we have put corrective actions into place to prevent this from happening again.”

Included products in the recall are:

– Four-Star Shredded Beef in Gravy Entrée, 12 oz per can UPC 7270511876
– Four-Star Shredded Chicken in Gravy Entrée, 12 oz. per can UPC 7270511880
– Four-Star Shredded Pork in Gravy Entrée, 12 oz. per can UPC 7270511878
– Four-Star Shredded Turkey in Gravy Entrée, 12 oz. per can UPC 7270511882

All of the products were sold in 12-ounce cans with a best-by date of 08/2024.

The FDA shared the notice and indicated that elevated Vitamin D levels can have negative impacts on dogs of all sizes and breeds.

The FDA alerts pet parents that ingestion of high levels of Vitamin D can be life-threatening to dogs:

“Dogs ingesting elevated levels of Vitamin D may exhibit symptoms such as vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling, and weight loss.

“Vitamin D when consumed at very high levels can lead to serious health issues in dogs including renal dysfunction. Consumers who have dogs that have consumed any of the affected products and are exhibiting these symptoms should contact their veterinarian.”

Thankfully, no illnesses have been linked with the food at this time. Fromm says consumers can return the affected product to the place of purchase for a full refund.
