Former Potcake Dog Greets Guests to Family’s Island Airbnb Despite Being Blind and Deaf
Sailor was just one of the many stray potcake dogs roaming Turks and Caicos Islands. But one day he showed up at Karen Lawson’s house and made himself comfortable on her porch. Like many of the potcakes (ed note: potcake is the name given to the dogs of the Bahamas and the Turks & Caicos Islands), Karen figured Sailor would leave by the morning. But he stayed and soon wormed his way into her family’s hearts.
Sailor arrived when he was around 2 years old and he’s now 14, blind and deaf. In his years with his chosen family, he’s become the official greeter for their Airbnb (Sail Away Cottages). Even though he’s blind he always seems to know when guests have arrived and is the first to go greet them. Sailor also acts as “host” during their stay. He will wait for guests to wake up in the morning and then takes them to the beach. How wonderful is that?
Karen says of Sailor, “He attaches himself to people. People just love him…everyone wants to take him home.”
Karen says she’s had so many guests want to take Sailor home that she recommends people visit Potcake Place to get their own potcake. She says potcakes are a “beautiful, smart, very chill breed.”
