Frostbitten Dog Chained In Snowstorm Almost Had His Sweet Spirit Broken

When rescuers first saw Benjamin, the dog was sitting chained in the snow and suffering from frostbite. The dog had been among nine chained dogs who animal rescuers found on a rural property in Kentucky.

As winter approached, the rescuers from Virginia tried to convince the dogs’ owner to free them into their care. Working for over a month with local volunteers, they were able to rescue and free six of the nine dogs. But when the local volunteers went to check on Benjamin and the other two dogs remaining on the property, they were alarmed to find one dog dead. They had been too late for that dog but they refused to give up on Benjamin and his companion Biscuit.

Benjamin was already suffering from frostbite and with a big snowstorm approaching the rescuers knew it was a race against the clock.

Within a few hours of posting Benjamin and Biscuit’s predicament on social media, people from all over the country sent donations to help the rescuers free the two dogs.

Benjamin and Biscuit would be rescued off their chains the night a massive snow storm hit.

It would take a few more weeks before volunteers from Ohio, Kentucky and Virginia joined forces to get Benjamin and Biscuit and transport them to Virginia and to the Good Newz Rehabilitation Center run by Dogs Deserve Better animal rescue. After 4,500 miles and almost three months of effort, a frostbitten and “broken” Benjamin arrived at their shelter. His ordeal had nearly broken his “sweet spirit.”

Rescuers wondered, would his spirit return to his body? But it didn’t take much. After a spa day the next day, Benjamin was already feeling better. And a few weeks after that he was enjoying tennis balls and living on a farm. His new little sister Roo showed him around the farm and introduced him to the horses and also showed him what life inside was like with couches and cuddles!

His rescuers say that Benjamin’s first home didn’t work out but he is happily settled in a new one. They wrote, “Benjamin bunked on a farm for a while and after proving to be a bit too naughty with the chickens, he moved to a cozy pad in Virginia Beach where he is loved, spoiled and has become a beach bumming dog park regular. Happy Tails, Benjamin!”
