German Shepherd Missing for 55 Days Rescued by Camper
A German Shepherd who was lost for 55 days in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in Minnesota has been happily reunited with her mom. The happy rescue is thanks to a dedicated volunteer who camped in the area for several days until he caught her.
Lessie the dog bolted from her family when the car her owner was in ran into a wall and flipped at the end of June. Searchers couldn’t find the dog, but a month later she was spotted about three miles away from the accident scene.
“I knew she could survive. Dogs are really smart,” Jennifer Cadigan with the lost dog group The Retrievers told Fox9. The Retrievers is a Minnesota-based all-volunteer organization dedicated to providing lost dog support services.
One of their volunteers, a man from Minneapolis, volunteered to camp out near the area where Lessie was last seen. He had some training and left out some food and a trail cam behind his campsite.
He caught sight of her the first night. By the fourth day he could feed her and put a leash on her. It took a second for Lessie to recognize her mom when she was reunited with her but when she did she “exploded with happiness.”
As to how Lessie survived so long in the wilds, her rescuers speculate she at moose poop and the fish guts that outdoorsmen throw out in the area.
