Rescuer Falls Through Stairs While Saving Dog And Puppies From Dilapidated Home

Donna has braved many derelict homes to rescue homeless dogs living in St. Louis. But on this occasion, she took a bit of a tumble while trying to save a mama dog and her puppies.

Donna first follows the mama dog, whose ribs are showing, and who is frightened by their approach. The mama is too frightened of them and flees the home but staying close by in case she has to rush to protect her puppies.

As Donna makes her way through the piles of trash, she spots bright little eyes looking up from beneath a crumbling staircase leading to the basement of the dilapidated house. Donna decides to brave the pitch-black basement to reach the puppies, but that’s when the boards give out beneath her feet….

Thankfully, Donna is unharmed by her tumble and is able to start rounding up the five puppies without too much trouble. But what about the mom?

Stray Rescue of St. Louis writes, “Frustrated that we couldn’t secure mom (because as you know, we NEVER leave a mom behind!), we decide to start gathering puppies before they can hide. They scream when we pick them up, they have never seen a human in their life. Their screams make mom a nervous wreck.”

“We use the opportunity and hide, hoping she’ll go in the basement to check on them. Sure enough, she does that. We block the broken staircase and come up with a plan. She does not know how to walk on a leash, so getting her up and out on a leash in this dangerous house is out of the question. We call for reinforcements. Two more staff members arrive with a crate and lower it into the basement,” they continue.

When Donna leashes the mama, she thrashes in fear. But they manage to get her into the crate without injuring her.

“We hate that we have to scare mom like this, but we refuse to leave her here,” the rescue explains. “Like most rescues, this part it isn’t pretty, but we are able to get her into the crate. HUGE sigh of relief! We lift her up and out of the house, passing the crate to each other…It is a success, and we are getting out before nightfall.”

Now the mama and all her puppies are safe and ready to go to foster homes. All the dogs have been named after the Great British Baking Show. Mom is Mary Berry. Her babies are: Soggy Bottom, Showstopper, Stodgy, Shortbread, and Sponge!
