Rescued Galgo Transforms from Broken to ‘Firecracker’
Freja, a Galgo Espanol (Spanish hunting dogs) went from a broken, frightened, hunched over dog to a “firecracker” after being adopted into a loving home.
Freja was found on the streets of Madrid, Spain. She had been hit by a car and abandoned by hunters. Eva Quirbach, who has adopted several Galgos from Spain and brought them to her home in Sweden, heard Freja’s story and knew she wanted to adopt Freja.
When Freja arrived she was so nervous and scared she didn’t want to leave her crate. Eva realized there would be a lot of work to do to make Freja comfortable. Yet, what Eva expected to take a year only took four weeks.
Freja noticed Eva’s other dogs and took cues from them. From there, her recovery was very fast and she was soon running free and enjoying her new life like a dog reborn.

Eva notes, “What we can learn from a dog like Freja is letting go of your past. It’s never too late to start your new journey. And no matter how broken and badly treated you have been, no matter how scared you’ve been, there’s always a way forward.”
Eva adds, “If you’re curious to read about Galgos I highly recommend www.freethegalgo.com.”
Freja was rescued from Fundación Benjamín Mehnert (FBM). Galgos Espanol are also rescued by other organizations such as Galgos del Sol Animal Rescue.
