Dog Adopted by State Trooper Who Saved Her from Extreme Heat
A stray dog found in blistering heat by the roadside by a Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper has been adopted by him.
Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Pumpy Tudors helped rescue the dog (now named Princess) after he received an alert from a Good Samaritan and saw her next to the side of an interstate. Princess had collapsed and was suffering from the 96-degree Fahrenheit heat (35.5 degrees Celsius).
Tudors immediately went to her side and using a jug of koolaid he had in the car, fashioned a water bottle for her. She was scared but too weak to run away but grateful to get the water. Tudors then brought over a chair and sat next to her to try and earn her trust. He also brought over an umbrella to provide her shade.
Kaye Fiorello, the Good Samaritan who first spotted Princess, wrote on Facebook how she alerted Trooper Tudors.
“I was driving up 75, and saw the trooper in the turnout…checked my speed, oh I’m good. A few minutes later, I see a dog in the ditch by one of the signs for exit 20. She looked bad. I was in left lane, heading to an appointment, and was torn. I decided I would go back southbound and risk a ticket by going to the turnout.”
“I turned in and the trooper was still there! Yay! He rolled down his window and said ‘yep! I’m here’ to which i told him about the dog and I didn’t want a ticket, but if I could help that dog, it was fine by me. He just asked where the dog was and was on his way! I followed and we found her. Still there, panting like she was fixing to die.”
Fiorello explained what happened after the pair stopped to help the dog. “That trooper dumped his jug of koolaid out and fashioned a water bowl for her. Then poured a couple bottles of water. The dog was scared of him, but frozen in weakness. She sniffed the water, then realized this kindness was for her! She drank that water down in minutes! And the trooper went and got her some more, plus a little debby. She watched him warily the whole time. She sniffed his hand, but was still wary.”
“Next thing, he goes to his vehicle and gets a chair and an umbrella. Telling me he will stay here until she trusts him, so he can get her to a shelter, or take her home.”
Tudors did earn Princess’ trust and was able to lift her to his car after which he brought her to the shelter.
“Today was #Ruff for #MansBestFriend. Thanks to a #GoodSamaritan, a Trooper was alerted to a dog in need on this hot summer day. The dog was on the side of #Interstate75 parched and desperately needing water and shelter from the heat. Now, this sweet pup is being TREATed well at Cleveland TN Animal Control,” the Tennessee Highway Patrol posted on its Facebook page shortly after the rescue.
Princess received medical care and will continue to heal at her new home with Tudor’s family. Fiorello wrote “Princess will join the Tudors family when she gets out of the vet hospital! YES! trooper Tudors and his family have adopted her!”
She added, “Princess still has a lot of healing, but she’s good girl with a strong will to live…”
She also added of Tudor’s actions, “I believe his being there at the right time, was one of those little messages reminding us of the good in our world.”
