Brave Dog ‘Herds’ Large Bear Off of Farm After He Wanders Onto Property
A farmer in Hancock, Wisconsin got quite a surprise when she heard her cattle dog, Trixie, barking and found a large black bear on her property instead of a loose cow.
“This morning I let my dog out and she was barking and barking and I was trying to do my kitchen chores and I looked out the window and I thought at first I had an Angus cow out. And then I looked again and it was a black bear,” Paulette Hansen told WSAW-TV. “Literally, about 5 feet tall.. 4 ½ feet at the top of his back.”
She began calling Trixie inside, but the Blue Heeler set to work to shoo the bear off the property instead. Trixie “herded” the bear to the edge of the fence and one open gate until the bear got the message and left.
Once her job was done, she ran over to Hansen, who had brought over her 4-wheeler to get her. “They’re bred to herd cattle. That’s their job. Or bears in this case,” Hansen said.
Hansen said it’s the first time she’s seen a bear on her farm, but now knows Trixie is prepared if one should ever return.
