Fishermen Save 38 Dogs Drowning in Mississippi Lake
Their peaceful fishing trip turned into a dramatic rescue mission.
Fishermen on a Mississippi lake got a catch they could never have imagined when their fishing trip turned into a rescue mission that saved 38 dogs.
Bob Gist headed out crappie fishing on Lake Grenada with his friend Brad Carlisle and guide Jordan Chrestman recently when they saw some dogs swimming in the lake. the dogs were quite far out from shore so the three men decided to go check on them. That’s when they realized there were a lot of dogs and they were all in danger. The dogs looked exhausted and were struggling to keep their heads above the water.
“There were dogs everywhere,” Gist later told AP News. “They were kind of swimming in circles and didn’t know which direction to go.”
It turns out the hound dogs had been participating in a Fox Run being held at Lake Grenada. But during the run, the dogs spotted a deer. The deer fled into the lake and started to swim across and the dogs followed after the animal. But the dogs lost track of the deer and lost track of where to go to get back to dry land.
The three men started to pull the dogs out of the water as their frantic owners watched from shore. They had to go back and forth three times to rescue all of the dogs because their boat was too small. waiting. They went back and got as many of the dogs left in the lake as they could find and returned to the lake shore.
When they couldn’t see any more dogs they figured their job was done but one dog owner approached them and asked if they would venture out one more time. His GPS tracking showed he still had four dogs out on the lake (all the dogs in the run were wearing GPS collars). By the time they got out to the four dogs, the dogs had been in the lake for an hour and were sinking under the water!
All in all, the fishermen rescued 38 dogs. And if they hadn’t been so quick to act, the outcome could have been tragic for dogs and their humans.
Gist credits their guide, Jordan, who runs the Tri-Lake Guide Service LLC. “The hero here is Jordan,” Gist said. “If it wasn’t for Jordan, there would have been 38 dead dogs.”
He added, “Opportunities to help somebody are in front of us all the time. Sometimes if you see something, do something.”
