Golden Retriever Demands Belly Rubs From Man Stealing Bike From Home

A video of a suspected bike thief who took the time to pet the family’s dog before making off with the e-bike is going viral. In the surveillance video shared by the San Diego Police Department, a young man is exiting an open garage just as a Golden Retriever appears from an open door in the home and runs up to the suspect.

When the dog looks like she’s going to follow him, the suspected burglar stops and comes back in the garage to give the dog some belly rubs. The man tells the Golden Retriever he’s the “coolest dog I’ve ever known.” He also chastises the dog’s family for leaving the garage open and even calls out “dad” loudly.

The man can be heard asking the dog, “Where’s your dad? Your dad should not leave the garage door open.”

It appears he doesn’t want the friendly dog to follow after him or get loose but it looks like the belly rubs appear to have done the trick. Thankfully, the dog didn’t run after the man after getting her belly rubs.

After watching the interaction, one viewer stated the obvious, “He’s a burglar.. But a dog lover.”

Another person commented that the interaction went as follows:
“Doggo: ‘Hey, dude. What’s up? I’m the watch dog.’
“Dude: ‘I’m stealing this bike!’
“Doggo: ‘Okay, I’ll watch!'”

One police officer said the interaction was “highly unusual” and they are looking for the man in connection with the July 15 theft of an Electra 3-speed bicycle that took place at 10:40pm at night, which they said was worth about $1,300.
