Man Does the Sweetest Thing to Make Sure His Special Needs Dog Feels Safe and Loved

Mr. Muggles was born with hydrocephalus. As result, the French Bulldog has excess fluid in his brain. Fortunately for the pup, Road Dogs Rescue rescued him from his breeder and put him into foster care where he could be looked after.

That’s when Mr. Muggles came to the attention of Blake, who immediately adopted the pup and flew to LA from Seattle to pick him up. Blake then drove 17 hours to return home as dogs with hydrocephalus can’t fly on planes.

Blake has had a dog with hydrocephalus before so knows how to care for Mr. Muggles but he also knows that each dog with the condition is unique and has their own unique set of challenges.

One such challenge happened recently.

“Several weeks ago Mr. Muggles hit his head which sent him into a grand mal seizure, followed by cluster seizures and needing to be intubated in the ICU and was in the ER for about a week, “Blake shared on Instagram.

This occurred because Mr. Muggles has two open fontanels on his head due to his skull never fully forming.

“In order to prevent any future head trauma from occurring again, I knew it was time for a helmet despite the potential that he still may outgrow it, as he is only 1 year old,” explained Blake.

Problem was, there weren’t any dog helmets out there with the padding Mr. Muggles needed.

Having a background in the automotive space, Blake decided to create his own special helmet to protect Mr. Muggles skull. It didn’t take him too long (an afternoon and less than $100 of materials) and it does the trick by protecting Mr. Muggles’ head from injuries and giving him the freedom to roam. It also gives Blake peace of mind!

The dog dad is quick to point out that Mr. Muggles puts the “special” into “special needs” because Mr. Muggles can turn a gloomy day into a joyous one by just interacting with him. Mr. Muggles is kind and cuddly and doesn’t really know he’s a special needs dog.

Blake says having a social needs dog is extremely rewarding as they are the “lovable lemons,” the underdogs, but they have so much love to give.
