Obese Chihuahua Who Could Barely Stand Up Now a Bundle of Energy Thanks to Rescuers
Look no further than to a tiny Chihuahua mix named Sox for the inspiration you might need to stick to your New Year’s resolutions.
When Amanda Tull met Sox it was love at first sight. She adopted the 7-year-old dog from San Francisco’s Muttville Senior Dog Rescue but it was only after she adopted her that she learned that Sox was may have been the the most overweight dog the animal rescue had ever had. They say that when Sox (formerly named Sweet Tomato) arrived the dog weighed an astounding 30 pounds, two-thirds more than she should weigh. It was hard for the poor pup to get up and get around.
The dog had been fed bacon and eggs by her previous owner but when her owner fell ill and could no longer care for Sox, she went to the senior dog rescue. The little dog lost an astounding two-thirds of her body weight thanks to an exercise program, a dedicated foster, lots of tender loving care and her “can-do” attitude.
Sox lost the pounds and now weighs a healthy 10 pounds. She’s also a bundle of energy. Tull is looking forward to many years with her sweet adopted pup.
Pet obesity is a serious problem in North America. Over the past 20 years, pet obesity rates have risen with 59% of dogs classified as overweight or obese in 2022, according to a report from the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention.
Obesity can lead to a number of health issues including shortening a dog’s life expectancy. Obesity can aggravate arthritis and increase the risk of diseases such as diabetes, skin conditions, respiratory disorders, renal dysfunction, osteoarthritis and cancer.
