Starving Pit Bull Covered with Mange Makes Amazing Transformation One Year Later
When Mary K. Elkins spotted Pig Pen abandoned on the roadside, the pit bull was severely emaciated and suffering from Demodex mange.
“Those sad eyes were the ones that met mine when I saw him on the side of the road,” wrote Mary.
“He took my breath away when I saw his condition. I had some stale Pirate’s Booty in my car and threw some to him. He devoured it. I said, come on, you’re going with me.”
“I really thought when I picked him up, I’d have to take him to be put down, he looked that sick. We put iodine wash soaked rags on his body, he looked up like it was the most amazing sensation of his life. He kissed us and we thought, this dog needs a chance. Turns out he was massively underweight, had loads of infection and full-body mange.”
Mary named the dog Pig Pen after Charlie Brown. “When we found him, his skin was so scaly and disgusting, he literally had a cloud of gross around him when he shook.”
She raised money for his care on Facebook and one year later, Mary said rescuing Pig Pen was “one of the hardest and most rewarding experiences of my life. Grew my heart a few sizes, easy.”
As for Pig Pen he has a wonderful new home. “He has blossomed into a really great dog! He belongs to a friend now, as they’d just lost their dog and I already have two. So they adopted him as soon as he recovered. We still have an incredible bond, though, when I get to see him.”
