Puppy Mauled By Dog is Safe and On the Mend Thanks to Rescuers
A little puppy in desperate need of medical attention has landed in the “safe haven” of Stray Rescue of St. Louis. Bauble was brought to the shelter in pitiful shape. Stray Rescue of St. Louis revealed on their Facebook page that the poor pup’s “leg is broken and his head is so swollen.”
The injured pup looked so confused and sad and he could only open one eye when he was cradled in the arms of the staff. The 12-pound pup went immediately into their vet clinic to be examined.
“What a day he’s had,” the Stray Rescue revealed later on their Facebook page after the vet had looked over Bauble.
“The lump on his head was a large abscess. He has a fracture near his skull that is under his eye (in his Zygomatic arch),” rescuers added. “He also has puncture wounds on his head which tells us this is the result of a much bigger dog getting a hold of him. He also has his broken leg which we will address next.”
“But for now, we cuddled him and helped him feel safe, began draining his abscess, and then after taking x-rays we needed to sedate him so we could get in there and clean his wound,” they explained.
“We will help this poor little puppy! We promise to keep you updated on this sweet guy.”
After a good night’s sleep and lots of love and attention, Bauble was looking better already.
Although how Bauble got hurt remains unclear, it appears that Bauble and his littermates may have been rescued by a Good Samaritan, who posted about the puppies on the Saving St. Louis Pets Facebook group page prior to Stray Rescue of St. Louis stepping in to help.
Claire Hickam posted to the Saving St. Louis Pets that she had picked up the mama and three pups on the roadside but that while taking care of the dogs and appealing for a rescue to take them in, her elderly father let the mama and pups into their unfenced yard for a potty break “and within 10 minutes a male dog was attacking the pups one has a hurt leg and one has a bite above the eye.” She added, “My dad was able to scare the dog off before it got any worse they need a rescue asap. We have never had this problem with other dogs but our yard isn’t fenced in and our 2 dogs are fixed. Someone please help these babies!”
Thankfully, the dog family came to the attention of Stray Rescue of St. Louis and they stepped forward to help. They brought the mama and other two puppies to their rescue a day after Bauble when they learned that the mama needed to be spayed and the other puppies had also been hurt.
“We found out Bauble has two sisters,” Stray Rescue wrote in a Facebook update on December 16th. “One has a broken leg and the other has an abscess and bite wound on her head just like Bauble…We’re thankful they are safe now.”
To add to their puppy-rescue-palooza, Stray Rescue mentioned that a gentleman came in late on December 15th with “a tub of 9 puppies” and said ‘I don’t know what to do with these.'” They immediately responded, “Oh my goodness, give us those babies, we know what to do!”
With the influx of puppies – and another litter of little puppies waiting for foster care – the shelter is in desperate need of fosters for the holidays. “So come one, come all! We open at 10am and will take all the help we can get. Plus, how fun would it be to have foster puppies for Christmas? All of your family and friends will love meeting them!”
