Shelter Dog Adopted After 5 Years Waiting Thanks to Community’s Gift

A dog named Roxy spent 1,752 days at Grand Strand Humane Society in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina waiting for a home. The shelter staff never gave up hope in finding Roxy a home but the Pit Bull continued to be overlooked until now.

Melanie and Jeff live eight hours away from the shelter but the retired couple have a big property and were looking for a dog when they spotted Roxy’s photo in December. They were heartbroken when they learned that she had lived almost her entire life in the shelter.

That’s when they reached out to Grand Strand Humane Society (GSHS) and spoke with them multiple times. Roxy went on a home visit too to see if it would be a good fit. The shelter staff were surprised and pleased by how quickly Roxy warmed up to them. But there was one obstacle in the adoption process. Thankfully, GSHS and the Grand Strand community would soon come to the rescue.

Grand Strand Humane Society explained in a Facebook post why they needed help. “Roxy’s new parents have several acres of land and in the past, their dogs have been trained using an invisible fence. We know that Roxy is far too strong for this to be a viable option for her. We know that what she needs, long-term, is a secure fence to keep her safe – and we know that asking these adopters to foot the bill for a brand-new fence is simply not fair,” the shelter wrote.

“The cost of the fence that our team felt comfortable with was $6,600. Roxy’s new home is over 8 hours away so asking a local company to donate their services was unfortunately not an option and we did not want to miss this opportunity for our girl. She has been waiting just shy of 5 years to break out of her cage – asking her to wait a single day longer than absolutely necessary was simply unfair,” they continued.

It didn’t take long for GSHS’s supporters to help raise the funds to purchase the fence that would secure Roxy her long-overdue home!

Roxy has settled in quickly and loves her new pawrents. She loves them so much she’s always seeking out cuddles.

It’s a wonderful happily ever after for her. Sweet dreams, Roxy!
