Shelter Dog Unexpectedly Comes to Aid of His New Mom
A newly adopted dog surprised his human when he did something to help her that she wan’t expecting.
Cassie Peña and her husband adopted an Akita/Husky mix from their local shelter in August and named him Dexter. A month later, Cassie had a medical procedure done and she needed help to get up in the morning as a result. “I had a medical procedure done that didn’t allow me to move too much due to pain,” she told DogHeirs.com.
That’s when Dexter did something that stunned Cassie. She shared this heartwarming moment with with DogHeirs adding, “I can tell you I wasn’t expecting this. Needless to say we are so happy he’s come into our lives!”

“So normally when I wake Danny (my husband) is already up and ready to help me up, get me food and my meds but this morning I woke at maybe 5:20am and I had to pee like no other!
“Before I could try and wake my husband up Dexter gets up, lays next to me on the floor (I fell asleep on the couch) and keeps nudging his head up and down, not on me or the couch, just a weird movement to see…I caught on, he must have known I needed help.”
“So I put my weight on his head and slide my body up with my arms take a breather and before I can say anything, this $42 dog we got from the shelter, is sitting down next to the couch repeating the head motion. So I proceed to put my weight on his head to stand up. He was steady the whole time.”
“He WALKED (not normal for Mr Dexter) me down the hall to the bathroom, letting me use him when I lost balance with the walls. We get to the bathroom where he steps in front of me a bit and I used his back for support until we got to the toilet where, without any commands said, he sat in front of it and did the nudging motion again.”
“I put my weight down and was able to potty. He stayed there until I turned to grab some toilet paper – he knew because he got back up and let me use his back until I got up and we made it back to the couch.”
“I am so blessed to have found him at the shelter! We have had him since maybe mid August. He’s an Akita/Husky mix that we found at our local shelter. The previous owner just handed him over. Needless to say we are so happy he’s come into our lives!!!! He has a bond with me and my husband like no other.”
