A skinny, abandoned dog has received an outpouring of support after she was found at a shelter with a heartbreaking note. Now, more of why she was left there to begin with has come to light.
Sky, a Pit Bull mix, was found underweight, roaming the grounds of the Delaware Humane Association (DHA) just after New Year’s. The shelter revealed:
“With each New Year comes new challenges and on our second day in, we welcomed one of our most heartbreaking souls yet. This skinny-mini’s name is Sky and she was discovered yesterday morning by one of our easy-going dogs, who barked alarmingly at one of the normally uneventful corners of our property.”
The staff brought her in and discovered a note inside a bag that was attached to the harness she was wearing.
“This blue and white chocolate dipped girl was roaming freely with an incredibly oversized, spiked leather harness with a bag attached and a note inside saying, ‘Please take care of Sky. She is 6 years old and friendly. I couldn’t take care of her, I became homeless and couldn’t feed her. She is not sick just hungry, very friendly. Please find her a home. Please.’

“While we have all the questions in the world, we are just thankful this sweetheart made it to us before it was too late.”
Sky was around 20 pounds under the weight she should be. But she was sweet and friendly and was more than happy to curl up for a nap once the shelter workers and vets were done looking her over.

She had fleas and whipworms, which could have contributed to some of her weight loss.

Although they had questions, the DHA believed it may not have been easy for her former owner. They also were uncertain if Sky may have been stolen from her rightful home.
Sky went to a foster home where she caught up on her sleep and although she had been vomiting, she recovered.

Shortly after the story hit the media and spread, Delaware Humane Association received a phone call. DHA wrote:
Yesterday afternoon, a man called DHA to let us know he was Sky’s owner. He stated that he and his wife recently lost their jobs, and were unable to feed Sky along with their large family. They believed it was selfish to keep her, and felt his only option was to leave her in a place he knew she would be cared for. So he left her with the now famous note to help her.”

“He has heard about the outpouring of love and offers to help him, but he wants to remain anonymous. His life is starting to turn around, and his only request is that we do what’s best for Sky and find her a good home.”

It’s a terrible thing to have your family go hungry, but DHA will ensure that never happens to her again. Sky recently stayed overnight with a staff member and they learned Sky is good with other dogs and children but is not particularly fond of cats. However, she is fond of snuggles and watching the TV with humans. She’s also a bit of a Houdini and can jump fences and break out of kennels, but she really loves baths and walks.

Pupdate:
A month after Sky’s arrival at the shelter, DHA shared the most amazing news: “We are thrilled to announce that our precious SKY has been adopted! Her new parents Rachael and Wilbur simply saw she had been good with kids in her available dog posting and knew they had to meet her. They arranged a dog meeting with their DHA alumni Jax, everyone hit it off great, and the rest is history!”
“Jax was a special needs dog with us, so the dedication and love they showed him let us know she couldn’t be going to a more perfect home. Thank you to everyone who cheered her on, supported her and helped us to get her to this point. Congratulations and the happiest of tails to Sky and her new family! This is truly the definition of “making friends for life!”
