Stray Dog Fends Off Coyotes During 9 Months On His Own
One day last October, Alina noticed a stray dog sniffing around her property near Wildcat Canyon Regional Park in Richmond, California. She wanted to catch him but the moment she would open her door the dog would run away. So she started putting out food for him, which he would come and get when no one was around. She also left toys out for him and he would take them away. She was sure he was lonely.
Months past, and Alina’s heart dropped when she spotted “JoJo” being pestered by coyotes on the trail camera she had installed to keep an eye on him. She got more and more worried about him so in February she put out a trap and filled it with lots of roast chicken. That did the trick! Safely trapped, Alina rented a van to transport JoJo to the Berkeley Animal Shelter to be assessed.
He didn’t do well at the shelter, but Alina had a breakthrough there when she brought him roast chicken again.
Now at a foster home through Love Second Chances, JoJo is a different dog. He loves belly rubs and to hang out on the couch. Sometimes Alina takes him on a walk in the canyon where he was found and he sniffs the trash cans that were no doubt his source of food when he was a stray. But this special and resilient dog now laps up human attention and is eager to please. He is looking for a forever home. To learn more about how to adopt him visit Love Second Chances.
