Stray Dog with Head Stuck in Cheese Ball Container for 3 Days Saved

Cheeto is the perfect name for a stray dog rescued with his head stuck in a jug of cheese puffs for at least three days.

The dog was seen wandering around with the plastic cheese ball container over his head in a Michigan neighborhood. He caught the attention of Sue and Tom Walsh who run The Last Stop Animal Rescue and Sanctuary and other animal lovers in the neighborhood.

Rescuers set up a trap to try and catch him, but of course he couldn’t smell the bait inside because the container was too tightly secured around his head. Knowing the dog’s life was on a time clock community members joined in the effort to rescue Cheeto.

Trail cams were set up to track him and the Huron Police Department called rescuers with sightings. Eventually, he was caught by Kim Broman Canales who devoted several days and nights to trying to catch him.

Trail camera caught a shot of Cheeto at night.

Kim had been up in the middle of the night searching for him and canvassing the rural neighbors where he had last been seen. Finally, after three days, she got a call of a “jackpot sighting” and rushed to the area where she spotted him.

“I noticed his direction of travel & hide behind a shed. As he passed by, I snuck up behind him to snappy snare,” she wrote on Facebook. “Thank God it worked!”

Kim continued, “On our drive to Tom’s, there were tears of happiness shed. Some of these cases take a toll on your soul. The past 3 days have been extremely stressful worrying how this would end.”

The jug was so tight over Cheeto’s head that it had to be cut off with a tree-branch cutter. Although they know Cheeto hadn’t eaten or had water for several days, Cheeto appears to have been without food for much longer based on his emaciated frame. He needs to gain at least 20 pounds but he’s already gained 5 thanks to the love and care from the Walsh’s.

Cheeto wants lots of cuddles from Sue. The Last Stop Animal Rescue and Sanctuary

Cheeto is super friendly and knows how to sit and shake a paw and likes nothing better than getting lots of cuddles and pets from his rescuers. Tom and Sue figure he’d be a lap dog if he could. For now, he’ll stay at their home and recover until such time he’s adoptable.

Since his rescue, Cheeto has been featured on Stephen Colbert and other media across North America.
