Stray Xolo Dog Shows Up At Family’s Home On Very Same Day Their Dog Passed Away
A family who had just lost their dog, Koda, was surprised when a mysterious stray appeared in their yard on the very same day.
In early January, the pet parents were grieving the loss of Koda when a Xoloitzcuintle (Mexican Hairless Dog) appeared out of nowhere. They later shared a video of the Xolo dog’s surprise arrival and it quickly went viral.
Stunned, the family took it as a sign they were meant to care for the dog. Many viewers felt the same way. One viewer commented, “Xolo dogs were believed to be guides to the afterlife in ancient cultures. I’m sure he’s there to tell you your baby is safe.” Another agreed, writing, “They’re known to accompany & guide your animals to the spirit world! Your fur baby is not far from you! Sending love!”
Other viewers had a hard time believing the dog was a stray given that Xolo dogs are very expensive, rare dogs. However, as one person who works at a humane society commented, “you wouldn’t believe the type of dogs that are strays, we had a purebred whippet come in and NOBODY came for it.” (Note: this is absolutely true. Currently, shelters have many purebred dogs available for adoption.)
Furthermore, the pet parents assured everyone that they had done everything possible to try and locate the owners of the stray. They not only posted widely on social media about the dog, but they filed a lost dog report with the local pound, went to the local animal shelter, and had him scanned for a microchip, but no one stepped forward. Sadly, the Xolo also showed signs of neglect and abuse.
His skin had been poorly cared for; it was dry and flaky. He is not potty trained or leash trained, and he flinches any time they try and pet his head. He was also not neutered, leading them to believe he could have been used for backyard breeding and abandoned.
The kind-hearted family has decided to keep the Xolo and named him Dante. Many people think his name is perfect, noting how much Dante looks like Dante, the animated Xolo dog from the Disney movie Coco, even down to his lenguita (little tongue). His new family thinks so too.
Over the past three weeks, Dante has been making amazing progress in his new forever home. His new family wrote, “We’ve already made such great progress over the last 3 weeks. He’s almost house trained, loves going on walks and playing with his squeaky toys!”
Dante’s new family plans on giving him the best future possible. And one dog lover noted that as much as Koda sent Dante to his family so they could love him, he also sent Dante to his family so he could be loved. They imagined Koda telling Dante, “Go to that house. They will love you like they loved me.”
