Top Dog Photos of the Year: Studio Portraits Capture Canine Charm
The Dog Photography Awards® celebrates exceptional images that capture the world of dogs. Each year, thousands of dog photographers submit their best work, competing for the top prize across various categories, including studio portraits.
In the studio setting, photographers strive to showcase each dog’s unique personality—a challenging feat! Can you capture a dog’s distinct expression? Can you keep your four-legged model still?
This year, the judges received so many remarkable studio portraits that they decided to award twelve additional images as Honorable Mentions alongside the top three prize winners.
From ‘Droop Dog’ to a ‘goddess in black and gold,’ these photos are sure to bring smiles to every dog lover’s face.

Rachel Hendrie writes of her image, “When composing this portrait I had a completely different image in mind. However, a magic moment was created when Henry’s hood slipped down over his eyes and I quickly grabbed this shot. I love the juxtaposition of this portrait. They say the eyes are the window to the soul and I find it amazing how, by just taking away that one aspect of him, it completely changes who he is and gives him a completely different persona. Just goes to show you can’t always judge a book by its cover.”

Emma Thomas writes, “In my photograph, I captured Maggie, a beautiful and intelligent Dalmatian—one of my favourite breeds. I dressed her in a black feather boa and a hat, echoing the iconic character Cruella de Vil from Disney’s ‘101 Dalmatians.’ I aim to invite an interplay of humour and nostalgia. Set against a neutral grey backdrop, Maggie’s natural black and white fur blends seamlessly into her elaborate costume. The unruly feathers and her regal expression create a striking composition.”

Five More Minutes Mum
“When working with the laziest dog breed in the world (I’m allowed to say this as he is my lazy boy!) there is always plenty of nap breaks,” says Rachel Hendrie. “On this particular occasion Henry decided to just flop down onto the floor in the middle of the studio and buried his head in a scarf. Nice try Henry, but being your typical dog mum/photographer I just decided to continue on whether he was asleep or not. Because who doesn’t love a picture of their sleeping baby!”
