Sweet Stray Dog Keeps Following Police Officers, So They Give Her a Job and a Home

A “Little Brown Dog” who won the hearts of animal control officers after she followed their vehicle in the aftermath of a hurricane has found a home and a new job with her rescuers.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Animal Care and Control’s Emergency Response team were doing care checks on animals left behind at their homes in evacuated areas of Tarboro, North Carolina on October 18, 2016 in the wake of Hurricane Matthew, when they met the small dog.

“They stopped to feed a few dogs gathered at a house. After making sure the dogs were ok, fed and cared for, the officer’s got back in their vehicles and headed down the street to continue the care checks,” explained CMPD. They spotted a little brown dog in the middle of the street.

She had no ID, collar or microchip but the officers figured she lived in the area and gave her fresh water and food and continued on their way. But the dog decided to follow them down the street.

They officers posted the video and it went viral and won the hearts of dog lovers all over the country.

Officer Kish, who is the one who gets out of the van in the video, said, “She must have followed us for over three blocks, we had to stop and pick her up.”

As soon as she was in their van, she made herself at home.

Despite their best efforts, however, no one ever came forward for Little Brown Dog, who was renamed “Charlotte” by Edgecombe Animal Control Shelter.

After several months at the shelter, the animal control officers who first rescued her, came back for her.

There was a job opening at the ACC, and they knew Charlotte would be the perfect dog to fill the role.

She has become part of the Human Education Program at ACC, taking over from the 14-year-old dog who is retiring. Charlotte is being embraced heartily by her rescuers who believe Charlotte is the perfect mascot for their department.
